Sunshine HouseThis is a gallery of our relationship with Sunshine House. Sunshine House is a community-based health promotion organization that provides services to groups in Winnipeg that have been historically underserved, such as individuals affected by HIV/AIDS, individuals who use substances, individuals exploring gender and sexual identity, and individuals experiencing homelessness. The Fowke lab and Sunshine House first came together in 2005 around the question of solvent use and the immune system. They have since partnered on basic science research and community initiatives such as the production of JD and the Sunshine Band CD and the Science and Supper series. More information on Sunshine House can be found at https://sunshinehousewpg.org/

NairobiIn 1984, Drs. Plummer and Ngugi established a cohort of female sex worker in Nairobi, Kenya using a peer educator model. Since then, the University of Manitoba has been working closely with the community to develop research projects that are relevant to community needs. This collaboration between the sex worker community and the University of Manitoba was responsible for some of the major findings in the early HIV epidemic including some of the earliest evidence of HIV transmission to females in Africa and identifying sexually transmitted diseases, the male foreskin and injectable hormonal contraceptives as co-factors in HIV transmission. The collaboration is also known for its identification and further characterization of natural resistance to HIV infection.
For the past 10 years, the University of Manitoba has led a PEPFAR-funded HIV prevention and treatment program in Nairobi that involves 35,000 female and 3,000 male sex workers, called the Sex Worker Outreach Program (SWOP) For more information, click here. |

Discovery DayDiscovery Days in Health Sciences are one-day events that give secondary school students (primarily Grade 11) who are interested in science the opportunity to explore a variety of career options in medicine and the health sciences.
A Discovery Day comprises a dynamic keynote lecture, interactive workshops and a career panel discussion. Students gain a clear picture of what it would be like to be a health professional by interacting with researchers, clinicians and educators in their real-life work setting. Teachers/guidance counsellors are also welcome, but not required, to attend. Pre-registration is required. (Click here for information) |
High School Student Research ProjectsThe Fowke lab has been host to several high school students with an interest in basic science research. During their time in the Fowke lab the high school students learn about the human immune system and infectious diseases. They also complete their own science experiments to study the immune system under the guidance of an assigned graduate student mentor from the Fowke Lab. Experiments conducted by the high school students are later presented at science fairs an competitions in Winnipeg.
